Most people open Google Play Console, see “Store listing experiments,” and immediately start testing the *first* thing they feel insecure about (usually the text).

That’s the slow way.

The fast way is to test in the order of biggest leverage → easiest to produce → least likely to confuse your data, and to treat A/B tests like a weekly habit, not a once-a-quarter project. Google’s own positioning of store listing experiments is exactly this: use experiments to drive installs and make changes with more confidence.

The simple principle

If you only remember one rule, make it this:

Test the thing that gets seen first, by the most people, and that you can change without rewriting your entire strategy.

On Google Play, that usually means: icon → screenshots → short description → feature graphic / video → long description.

And yes, you can test a lot of these elements via Store listing experiments (creative + messaging).

Step 0: Don’t sabotage the test before it starts

A/B tests fail for boring reasons, not “bad marketing.”

A few guardrails that save you from wasting weeks:

Only test one idea at a time. If you change the icon *and* screenshots in the same test, you won’t know what caused the lift.

Make variations meaningfully different. Tiny changes often produce “nothing happened,” and you learn nothing.

Pick the right success metric. Some setups let you choose between “first-time installers” and something closer to “retained first-time installers.” If you can, retention-weighted metrics usually stop you from “winning” with clickbait creatives that bring low-quality users.

Stay policy-compliant. Don’t “test” your way into getting your listing rejected. Google explicitly emphasizes high-quality, policy-compliant listings (text + assets) as part of best practices.

The order that usually works best

1) Icon first (because it’s everywhere)

Your icon isn’t just a “listing thing.” It shows up in search results, on competitor comparisons, and in a bunch of surfaces where users make a split-second choice. That’s why it’s usually the highest-leverage test to run first.

What to test (keep it simple):

  • Recognizability at small sizes (does it still read at 48px?)
  • Single symbol vs. symbol + detail
  • High contrast vs. soft gradients
  • One strong brand color vs. multicolor

A good icon test is not "two different art styles." It’s one clear hypothesis:

> “If the icon is simpler and higher contrast, more people will tap and install.”

Run the test. If it wins, you just improved every funnel above your screenshots.

2) Screenshots second (because they explain the value)

Once the icon gets the click, screenshots do the convincing.

This is where most apps leak conversion. Not because the screenshots are ugly—because they don’t answer the user’s question fast:

  • “What is this?”
  • “Why should I care?”
  • “Is it for me?”

Screenshot tests that tend to work:

  • Benefit-first text overlays vs. feature-only
  • Problem → solution narrative in the first 3 frames
  • Social proof frame early vs. late
  • Use-case segmentation (for different audiences)

One practical move: treat the first 3 screenshots as your “pitch deck.” If users don’t get it there, they rarely read your long description.

3) Short description third (because it’s the bridge)

Google Play highlights short description alongside your preview assets. It’s not where you tell your life story. It’s where you remove doubt in one sentence.

Good tests here are usually about *positioning*, not adjectives:

  • “Track expenses in 30 seconds” vs “Personal finance made simple”
  • “AI meal plans for busy people” vs “Lose weight with custom plans”

Keep each variant tightly tied to an audience. If you try to please everyone, you’ll test mush vs. mush.

4) Feature graphic / promo video (only if it actually shows)

This one is a trap for a lot of teams. People spend days on a feature graphic while their screenshots are still weak.

Feature graphic and video can matter a lot in the right situation, but don’t let it steal time from higher leverage tests. So the order is: fix icon + screenshots first, then come here.

5) Long description last (because few people read it)

Long description can still matter for trust and edge cases (and it’s important for compliance), but it rarely beats the impact of icon/screenshots.

When you test long description, test structure—not fluff:

  • scannable formatting vs. blocks
  • clearer feature sections vs. storytelling
  • fewer claims, more proof

A weekly routine you can actually sustain

Here’s a cadence that doesn’t feel like a “big initiative.”

Day 1 (pick one hypothesis):

Decide what you’re trying to learn. Not “improve conversion.” Something specific:

> “If the first screenshot shows outcome + time saved, installs increase.”

Day 2 (make 1 variation):

One variation is enough. You don’t need 5. You want speed and clarity.

Day 3–6 (let it run):

Don’t check it every hour. Peeking makes you impatient and you’ll stop tests too early.

Day 7 (decide + ship):

If it wins and the lift is meaningful, ship it. If it’s flat, you still learned something: your problem is elsewhere.

What most people get wrong (and how to not do that)

They test tiny changes. If your variant is “same icon but slightly different shadow,” the result will be noise.

They change too many things at once. Then they “win” and don’t know what to keep.

They treat the listing like art, not a funnel. Your listing is not a brand moodboard. It’s a conversion flow.

And they forget that competitors are doing the same thing. If you never look at how other apps position themselves (and how they change over time), your tests become random.
